Mediacorp reaffirms solidarity with Singaporeans as more turn to the national media network under COVID-19 circumstances

Significant increase in news viewership alongside overall growth in content consumption

Singapore, 21 April 2020 – More audiences are engaging with Mediacorp amidst the current COVID-19 situation, underscoring the company’s position as Singapore’s national media network and the go-to source for timely, trusted news and quality, engaging content.

In recent months, Mediacorp has seen a spike in news consumption, reinforcing the premium placed on its provision of credible content in today’s information landscape, where disinformation is widespread:

  • From 1 March – 15 April 2020, primetime news bulletins across all Mediacorp channels and languages attained a 73 percent uptick in overall ratings, compared to the same period last year. Of this, year-on-year ratings for CNA primetime news bulletins have tripled, while News 5 and Channel 8 primetime news ratings have jumped by 100 percent and nearly 70 percent respectively[1].
  • During the same period, a weekly average of 2.8M Singaporeans accessed various news bulletins across different time slots, with CNA news bulletins reaching over 1M Singaporeans every week. Of this, the first nine days of the circuit-breaker period (which commenced on 7 April 2020) saw over 3.2M Singaporeans tuning into news[2].
  • In an indication of overall growth in digital content consumption in March 2020, its digital network also surpassed the milestone of half-billion page views with over 62 million unique views, which is 3.5 times of that tallied in March last year[3].
  • Specifically, CNA received 52 million unique visitors and 378 million page views, or about four times more users with nearly five times more page views versus the same month last year [3].

These results underline the popular appeal of Mediacorp’s array of proudly made-in-Singapore stories showcasing Singapore talent, alongside the relevance of its current content offerings including: The One World: Together At Home COVID-19 global special that was brought live to Mediacorp audiences on 19 April; plus new productions such as the multi-platform original infotainment series Learn Together with Me and Get Fit With Me which seek to support audiences in staying active from home during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
