Teoh Ze Tong Crowned as Winner of Star Search 2019

Singapore, 3 November 2019 – Teoh Ze Tong was crowned the Star Search 2019 winner in a dramatic Grand Final held at The Theatre at Mediacorp this evening. After a standout performance that impressed both the judges and audiences, the 26-year old Assistant CRM Manager was presented with the champion trophy by Chairman, Mediacorp Niam Chiang Meng, a much-coveted Mediacorp contract by Chief Executive Officer, Mediacorp Tham Loke Kheng, as well as the key to a new Audi Q2.

This result was unveiled after a three-hour long show which saw the Top 12 contestants battling it out in four segments: 1) individual comm cards (20%); 2) viral dance performances (10%); 3) personal eloquence (20%); and 4) acting abilities (50%). Teoh emerged tops with his strong acting prowess and commanding stage presence wowing the panel of judges comprising Hong Kong superstars Carina Lau, Simon Yam and Stephen Fung, as well as media veteran Man Shu Sum and Mediacorp’s Chief Content Officer Doreen Neo.

“Tonight, a star is born! My heartiest congratulations go to Teoh Ze Tong for winning the competition and impressing us all with his brilliant show of verve, confidence and finesse. And a big ‘bravo’ too to the other 11 finalists for putting in a tremendous performance not just tonight, but over the course of a long and intense seven months. You have captured the hearts and minds of many fans throughout this journey, and we hope to see more of you on our screens in time to come,” said Neo.

23-year old Herman Keh and 17-year old Ye Jia Yun clinched the honour of being first and second runners-up, respectively, for their stellar displays. Meanwhile 20-year old Vanessa Ho bagged the Samsung Galaxy: Breakthrough Award, awarded to the contestant who best exemplifies the “Do What You Can’t” spirit by showcasing the personality and traits in defying what they can achieve. See Annex A for more information on the prizes.

Looking on the 12 finalists with visible pride were their celebrity mentors Chen Hanwei, Huang Biren and Christopher Lee, who joined Star Search alumni like Zoe Tay, Desmond Tan and Felicia Chin in gracing the Grand Final show. The event marks the culmination of a seven-month long journey that began in May when Star Search 2019 held open auditions, attracting 1,200 other hopefuls vying for a chance to be the next Ah Ge or Ah Jie to set Stars Avenue alight.

Mediacorp’s Chief Customer Officer Irene Lim remarked, “Star Search 2019 has been a hit with audiences, and we are delighted that the competition continues to attract a strong following nine years after the last edition. Mediacorp’s investment in a range of talent discovery platforms, such as Star Search, underlines our commitment to nurturing budding talents by providing them with the environment and resources to prime them for the main stage.”

In this regard, Mediacorp announced plans to launch a brand new dance competition that will debut in 2020. More details will be announced in due course.
