The season for giving comes early at President’s Star Charity 2019!

Singapore, 18 October 2019 – “Be the change we want to see” – this earnest entreaty serves as the slogan for the 26th edition of the President’s Star Charity (PSC), as Mediacorp’s fundraiser under the President’s Challenge does its part to promote philanthropic progress in Singapore at the live show on Sunday, 10 November 2019 on Toggle and Channel 5.

This year’s theme of teamwork is tied to the stellar showcase of local and international personalities, who will be partnering each other in performances aimed at canvassing public donations for disadvantaged communities.

Hosted by household celebrity names Glenda Chong and Chua Enlai, audiences can expect an enthralling evening of entertainment (refer to the annex for the full list of performers). Highlights include venerated vocalist Amy of Malaysian rock band Search; Filipino singing sensations HK Sisters; and a comedic stage skit focusing on mental health featuring Chua Enlai, Suhaimi Yusof, Udaya, Xixi and Richard Low.

A stirring segment of the show will see Mediacorp Young Talents Project 2019 winners accompanying artistes Kym Ng and Evelyn Tan for a redux of the revered song “The Moon Represents My Heart” 《月亮代表我的心》 by Teresa Teng. This will serve as a touching tribute to PSC founder and late former President Ong Teng Cheong, whose piano performance of the beloved ballad at PSC 1999 twenty years ago will be beamed as the backdrop for this year’s rendition.

Also on the agenda are cross-cultural collaborations exemplifying Mediacorp’s efforts to engage with and build upon the broader creative ecosystem. These co-performances include a dynamic dance-off between the feisty Fabulous Sisters from Japan and TTYL, a freshly formed Singapore girl group comprising sprightly starlets Kayly Loh, Hazelle Teo, Denise Camillia Tan and Tay Ying; plus a captivating cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” from A Star Is Born (2018) by soulful Hong Kong siren Tien Chong and Singapore serenader Shak.

In a statement of solidarity, PSC 2019 will track the trail of Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin, who will be running the last leg of Relay Majulah, a President’s Challenge fundraising enterprise encompassing 200 runners over 2,000 kilometres. Live cameras will capture Speaker Tan as he winds his way from Commonwealth Avenue onto North Buona Vista Road and Stars Avenue, before ending the eight-day relay “live” by symbolically bestowing the baton to PSC 2019 Guest-of-Honour President Halimah Yacob onstage at The Theatre at Mediacorp.

President Halimah Yacob said: “Mediacorp’s annual President’s Star Charity is an important highlight in the President’s Challenge calendar to galvanise the community-at-large to help the disadvantaged in society. This year, we are focusing on empowering persons with disabilities so that they can gain independence and contribute meaningfully to society. I encourage all Singaporeans to give generously – whether in monetary terms, time or expertise rendered – so that together, we can create a caring, inclusive and cohesive society.”

Tham Loke Kheng, CEO, Mediacorp said: “Through the PSC, we bring together our people, partners and platforms to share the stories of courageous individuals in disadvantaged circumstances and the organisations which support them. The performances are dedicated to them. We hope that each act will inspire the public to give generously and consider ways they can uplift fellow Singaporeans.”

Catch the President’s Star Charity 2019 on Toggle or Channel 5 live on Sunday, 10 November 2019, 7.30pm to 9.30pm, and in a repeat on Sunday, 17 November 2019, 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Available on VOD on Toggle after the repeat.

All proceeds from PSC 2019 will aid the 67 beneficiaries backed by the President's Challenge. These institutions include Club HEAL (Hope, Empowerment, Acceptance & Love), a charity that supports the societal reintegration of individuals with mental health issues; Very Special Arts, which is dedicated to offering opportunities for disabled persons to participate in the arts; and TOUCH Community Services, a multi-service organisation spanning a spectrum of communal causes. About President’s Star Charity
Mediacorp produced the first President’s Star Charity (PSC) Show in 1994, based on an idea by the late former President Ong Teng Cheong to promote artistic talent and contribute to charity at the same time. PSC is Mediacorp’s contribution to the President’s Challenge and, by far, the most visible and effective contribution.
