Syawal Yusoff

Syawal is a presenter for Suria’s daily news bulletin, BERITA. 

He started his career in journalism with the Malay News and Current Affairs unit in Mediacorp in 2019.

As a Senior Journalist, he is responsible for covering breaking news and events on the Malay-Muslim community, specialising in health, education, lifestyle and entertainment.

In 2023, he was involved in the extensive coverage of the Presidential Election 2023. Some notable key events he has covered including the National Day Parade, Singapore Budget, National Day Rally as well as Singapore’s General Election 2020. Throughout the pandemic, he was also on the ground to bringing in stories and developments of the COVID-19 situation in Singapore.

Over on the digital sphere, Syawal was part of the pioneering team for BERITA Mediacorp’s first TikTok account where he produced clips featuring popular local and regional celebrities such as Taufik Batisah, Fuad Rahman, Aina Abdul and Siti Nurhaliza which has garnered close to 800,000, making it the highest viewed video for the account. He has also produced content for BERITA Mediacorp’s first podcast channel featuring personality interviews.

With a flair for public speaking and outreach, Syawal has been engaging the Malay audiences through outdoor news events and forums in 2019, 2021 and 2023. 

Prior to journalism, Syawal was in public service for 8 years, specialising in event management as well as community outreach and partnership. He has worked with many schools and public – providing educations on topics such as responsible pet ownership, food safety and financial literacy.

With a passion for the performing arts, he has been in several independent theatre productions with MADDspace and hosted the ‘Binge Or Bin’ online show produced by Mediacorp’s ‘You Got Watch’ platform.

Syawal holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Communication from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University.
