Putting theory into practice

Like all other graduating students at Temasek Polytechnic, Chelsea Toh started working on her Final Year Project (FYP) with much trepidation. Afterall, the project will account for a substantial proportion of her GPA, but little did she know that it would turn out to be the beginning of an incredible journey.

Chelsea and her groupmates were assigned to work with Mediacorp as their client for their FYP – to solve a business problem on how the organisation can appeal to the younger audience. The Mediacorp team was so impressed by Chelsea’s entrepreneurial spirit and creativity that they hired her as an intern at Melon8, Mediacorp’s social-first content outfit that is focused on engaging the millennial audience.

Now, Chelsea works as a part-time Assistant Producer at Melon8, while pursuing her undergraduate degree in Marketing at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. As an Assistant Producer, Chelsea comes up with content ideas, works on the storyboarding, liaises with talent and schedules shoots, with a primary focus on You Got Watch, one of the content brands under Melon8.

“It almost feels like a start-up here. It gives me greater exposure to all the different production processes,” said Chelsea. “It’s a rare experience and I count myself lucky. This will definitely give me an edge over my peers in terms portfolio building when I graduate.”

Fellow Temasek Polytechnic student Vineeta Chandrasekaran also found herself working at Melon8 following her graduation.

Like Chelsea, Vineeta got to know the Melon8 team when Mediacorp was assigned as her client for her FYP. Now, she works as a freelance Media Editor, Translator and Art Assistant at Melon8 while she takes a gap year. During this time, she hopes to figure out which area of the media industry to pursue as a career.

“The content that Melon8 creates is very relevant for youth and I think it’s pretty cool to be part of the team producing such content. If I am looking for a full-time job in the future, I will definitely consider Melon8,” said Vineeta.
