2.42 million viewers watched MediaCorp's production of Singapore's General Election results

MediaCorp's "live" coverage of the General Election results on television on 7 May 2010 reached more than 2.42 million viewers (P4+) about half of Singapore's total P4+ viewers of 4.8 million.

2.42 million viewers watched MediaCorp's production of Singapore's General Election results

Singapore, 11 May 2011 - MediaCorp's "live" coverage of the General Election results on television on 7 May 2011 reached more than 2.42 million viewers (P4+) about half of Singapore's total P4+ viewers of 4.8 million. The 61/2 hour programme, Vote 2011 Singapore was produced in four languages and shown over five TV channels - Channels 5, 8, Suria, Vasantham, and Channel NewsAsia, which included analysts in studio. 

The 61/2 hour programme saw 20% more viewers than the previous "live" coverage of the General Election polling results in 2006. Channel 5 registered the highest growth of 52% with 1.15 million viewers, followed by Suria with 44% reaching 260,000 viewers. Channel NewsAsia had 674,000 viewers which represented a 41% increase while Channel 8 grew 15% with 1.44 million viewers. Vasantham attracted 114,000 viewers for its first election coverage since it became a full-fledged channel in 2008.

Some 660 MediaCorp staff were involved in bringing the General Election coverage with more than 180 being deployed on the ground on Polling night from the various news platforms on TV, radio and print. Viewers were able to catch the Returning Officer delivering the "live" results from the Elections Department, and also see the reactions of candidates and their supporters in 12 locations and assembly areas around the island.

Real-time information graphics were displayed immediately as the results were announced throughout the night into the wee hours of the morning. Vote 2011 Singapore ended its telecast after the Prime Minister's traditional post-election news conference. 

Besides the "live" action on TV, Singaporeans could follow the "live" proceedings and analysis on the airwaves across the four language stations: 938LIVE (English), Capital 95.8FM (Mandarin), Warna 94.2FM (Malay) and Oli 96.8FM (Tamil). All other MediaCorp radio stations carried newsflashes of the latest results as they were announced.

In what has been called the social media election, MediaCorp's various online platforms offered a plethora of multimedia experiences for netizens yearning for the latest updates. General Election microsite ge.sg, its mobile site m.ge.sgchannelnewsasia.comTODAYonline at Facebooktodayonline.com/SingaporeVotes as well asxinmsn.com/news gave netizens the latest news and updates, with blogs.todayonline.com/singaporevotes having around 400 blog posts containing election-related information, rally site maps and scorecards. Collectively, they chalked up a whopping 49 million page and video views over the 12-day period from Nomination Day (27 April) to Results Day (8 May).

On top of that, more than 1,000 video clips were uploaded to ge.sg and TODAYdigital's Channel at YouTube, attracting more than 5 million views during the election period.

During the 61/2 hour "live" telecast on Polling Day, ge.sg served 930,000 live video streams in total with 19,500 concurrent streams at its peak. Furthermore, the site's live blog also attracted 30,000 active users from Singapore and around the world.

Twitter followers received daily live tweets from all the rally sites that contained up-to-date breaking information and news during the 12-day period at @TODAYonline,@ge2011 and @cnalatest with over 2,300 tweets sent in total. The Twitter page for TODAYonline achieved an impressive Klout score of 74 out of 100 which is a testament of its wide and strong sphere of global online influence.
