Asia Contents Awards 2019: Mediacorp’s teen drama Faculty gets the nod for Best Asian Drama, while Fang Rong clinches Best Rising Star Award

Mediacorp clinched two major awards at the inaugural Asia Contents Awards (ACA) held in Busan yesterday with Best Asian Drama for popular teen drama Faculty and Best Rising Star for its up-and-coming talent Fang Rong.

Singapore, 7 October 2019 – Mediacorp clinched two major awards at the inaugural Asia Contents Awards (ACA) held in Busan yesterday with Best Asian Drama for popular teen drama Faculty and Best Rising Star for its up-and-coming talent Fang Rong.

Faculty, a fast-paced 20-parter, illustrates the secret lives of students and professors of a prestigious private university, as they seek to survive through scandals and pressures of varsity life. The title emerged victorious as one of the two dramas awarded Best Asian Drama across all Asian countries.

Tan Wei-Lyn, Head, English Drama Productions, Mediacorp said: “Faculty is a varsity-themed drama that explores novel themes rarely seen in local content such as academia politics and the millennial psyche. We are very honoured that the show has been recognised at a regional level by the Asia Contents Awards for its boundary-breaking content and production quality.”

Budding starlet Fang Rong, who plays a 19-year-old freshman in Faculty, also earned praise for her convincing portrayal of a multi-layered character, hiding a sinister online personality behind the façade of a seemingly innocent university newbie.

On being awarded the Best Rising Star for her role, Fang Rong said: “Growing up as a child actor, I’ve always loved acting. I’m glad that now that I’m older, I am still able to pursue acting as my career. I’d like to thank all the people who have stood by me through the last 20 years – my family for their unconditional love as well as mentors from Mediacorp and The Celebrity Agency for the guidance and opportunities. To be recognised for something that is so close to my heart means the world to me. But what means more than that, is that I get the chance to move the hearts of the world – one role at a time.”

The ACA is jointly organised by the Busan International Film Festival and the Asian Film Market to celebrate outstanding broadcast content and talents in Asia, and is a first venture for both into the non-film industry. The 24th Busan International Film Festival is held from 3 – 12 October 2019, while the Asian Film Market is held from 5 – 8 October 2019.
