Synopsis and telecast details on This Land Is Mine

Singapore. World War 2. Following the Japanese surrender and the British’s return, Singapore had much rebuilding to do, both physically and spiritually. Unemployment was high, public utilities disrupted, streets were dark, dirty, and unsafe at night, food prices soared, healthcare, education, all suffered immediately following the war. Loyalties also conflicted, from those who were once subservient to the Japanese to the MPAJA (Malaysian People’s Anti-Japanese Army). This was the new normal in Singapore, late-1945. A search for identity began. Who were we? Who were we loyal to? In this tumultuous time, one family tries to move on with their lives: Dennis Chiang (Pierre Png), a rising associate in the law firm of d’Almeida & d’Almeida; June Chiang (Rebecca Lim), Dennis’ cousin and a clerk in the same law firm; and Mak (Noorlinah Mohamed), the matriarch of the Chiang family.

Dennis Chiang has just returned to Singapore from England, where he has been forced to spend the war years. A lawyer at the firm of d’Almeida & d’Almeida before the Japanese Occupation, he returns to help the firm get back on its feet. His first case is defending Nakamura (Sugie Phua), a Kempeitai (Japanese military police) torturer placed on a trial by the British for his war crimes. Dennis faces blowbacks from an angered Mak and June who are still recovering from the trauma of the Japanese Occupation and threats on his life by the MPAJA. However, these are nothing compared to the shocking discovery he makes about Nakamura’s true identity later on.

Meanwhile, June encounters a young British girl, Margaret Barron (Elly Gaskell) who was orphaned during the war and is now being raised by her firm’s former driver, Ahmad’s (Jasmi Ahmad) family in the Malay kampong. The peace of village life is shattered when Margaret’s aunt, Emma Rider (Shona Benson) arrives to claim and bring her back to England but Margaret does not want to leave, sparking off a conflict with Ahmad’s family. To complicate matters, an innocent attraction has developed between marge and Ahmad’s youngest son, Karim (Syah Riszuan).

In another story arc, Habibullah (Shabir), an officer of the Indian Army who fought alongside the British in India is posted to Singapore under the sadistic Colonel Holmes (Matt Grey) who accuses him of being a traitor to the British, locking him up in solitary confinement. Habibullah’s men stage a mutiny and kill Holmes. Habibullah takes the blame for the mutiny and goes on the run but gets caught and must stand trial for treason. The case eventually lands at d’Almeida & d’Almeida, and Dennis is once again in the line of fire, this time assisted by June. Another more personal case that falls into their laps concern the inheritance rights to the fortune left behind by Lau Leong Ann (a rich businessman killed by the MPAJA) as three women surface claiming to be Leong Ann’s adopted son Gim Huat’s (Nicholas Lim) birth mother and hence the right to the fortune.

The professional cases of Dennis and June are underscored by their personal journeys:

Dennis is struggling to re-establish himself and find his feet as well as his identity. The people around him – in particular locals who suffered through the Japanese Occupation – consider him an outcast and a traitor who ran away during the War. Dennis must prove to them that he belongs in Singapore as much as anyone of them.

Downstairs S1 and S2

Downstairs is an adult animated series that follows a cast of wacky and colourful Kopitiam stalls owners on the ground floor of an unnumbered HDB flat, in an unnamed HDB estate. Together, everyone seems to bring out the very best and worst in each other as they embark on crazy adventures throughout their little neighborhood.

We are Singaporeans S5

We Are Singaporeans is back with Season 5! The quiz game show which puts Singapore and her citizens in the spotlight, our topics range from general information to pop culture, and even the esoteric! Returning to host and entertain is the ever delightful and captivating Hossan Leong who will grill our fellow Singaporeans on their knowledge of Singapore, all for a chance to win cash prizes up to 20,000 dollars!

Mata Mata S1 to S3

1949, the Japanese Occupation is over, Singapore has returned to British control, but the people are still struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives. 19-year-old Elizabeth Lee (Cheryl Wee) has just finished her Senior Cambridge exams and her mother, Yoke Lien (Aileen Tan) gives her two choices: find a job or get married. However, Elizabeth's feisty nature gets the better of her and she gets into a scuffle with gangsters, catching the attention of secret society member Lim Seng Hock (Daren Tan) and British officer Henry Ridley (Jason Godfrey).

Zi Char Wars

Tan Ah Xiong and Bruce Sim were best friends who have known one another their whole lives. But after the ‘chili crab incident’ their friendship soured into a bitter rivalry. This rivalry would go on to outlive some people and turn the kopitiam into a hot spot for noise pollution through constant megaphone shouting matches. However, all their frequent pranks, occasional theft and everyday chaos will soon come to an end when one of them has to shut down their stall due to budget cuts. May the best man win… Unlimited bragging rights.

There’s Something About Orchard

Discover the wild and surprising history of the Orchard precinct back in the 1960s, as never before. Our guides to this iconic precinct are 3 young, intrepid hosts - a musician, a fashion designer and a chef - who take us on their deep dives into the past to dig up insider secrets about its music, fashion and food scenes. Was there really a topless cabaret along Scotts Road? How did trendsetting boutiques and supermodel sisters start Orchard's reputation as a shopping district? And did Singapore's first unofficial hawker centre really start in a Orchard carpark? Our hosts turn their history lessons into original creations inspired by the good old days of writing a song and shooting a funky music video, designing a retro fashion collection and launching a fashion show, and lastly curating an unforgettable dinner experience for a select few that marries Indian Mee Siam, Loh Gai Yik, Shashlik Kebab and many more.

Belly of a Nation S2

Why did early immigrants create food uniquely Singaporean? What insights can hawkers give us to the making of some popular hawker dishes and what trials and tribulations await those in the trade and others getting into it for the very first time? How can our hawker culture carry on when the odds are stacked against it? This two-part documentary series goes into the hearts and minds of Singapore's hawkers while paying homage to the amazing dishes that they serve. Going back into the past, we trace how ethnic lines were blurred by roving hawkers and continued to integrate in the hawker centres. But over the years, against the winds of change, eating hawker food in hot and humid centres fell out of fashion. As the first-generation stallholders pass on, who is going to carry their torch? We profile some of the brave and intrepid hawkerpreneurs, the new breed, who despite the odds think that they can make it and keep the hawker culture alive in Singapore.

Reflections of Yesteryear

This documentary features voices of Singapore’s first generation leaders, on the journey to survive and prosper as a nation.

Into The Vault S2

What would you serve the future King of England? Self-trained chef Kenneth Yong attempts to recreate one of the biggest banquets in Singapore's colonial history - the grand dinner thrown by the colonial government in 1922 for the visiting Prince of Wales, Edward VIII. He goes on an epic quest to uncover the menu, travelling back in time to the height of the colonial era, and discovers surprising nuggets about the life - and diet - of British colonials in Singapore. It seems they really liked to party, and that they also ate food like... rendang spaghetti? Inconceivable!
