Gao Mei Gui clinches winning trophy at Mediacorp’s singing competition SPOP WAVE! (SPOP 艺起唱)

After eight weeks of intense competition, Gao Mei Gui 高美贵 triumphantly took home the champion title at the SPOP WAVE! Grand Final held earlier this evening at Capitol Theatre Singapore. The 32-year-old producer-presenter was crowned after edging out fellow finalists Ridhwan 任毅翔 and Sherly Devonne Ng 黄艺萱 with her impressive singing prowess and charismatic stage presence. 

Singapore, 21 December 2021 – After eight weeks of intense competition, Gao Mei Gui 高美贵 triumphantly took home the champion title at the SPOP WAVE! Grand Final held earlier this evening at Capitol Theatre Singapore. The 32-year-old producer-presenter was crowned after edging out fellow finalists Ridhwan 任毅翔 and Sherly Devonne Ng 黄艺萱with her impressive singing prowess and charismatic stage presence. 

Hosted by YES 933 producer-presenters Zhong Kunhua 钟坤华 and Chen Ning 陈宁, SPOP WAVE! is a singing competition specially curated for local personalities in search of a breakout stage to fulfill their singing dreams. Over two months since 2 November, eight public personalities pitted against one another in two battling groups under the mentorship of local singer-composer Hong Junyang 洪俊扬 and singing duo The Freshman 插班生, in their journey to the finale. 

At the exciting Grand Final, Mei Gui took to the stage with two passionate numbers – Take It Slow 慢慢来 and Cliff To The Heaven 像天堂的悬崖 – and wowed resident judges Kit Chan 陈洁仪, Lee Wei Song 李伟菘, Lee Si Song 李偲菘 as well as guest judge WeiBird Wei韦礼安 with her vocal abilities and emotional performances. Mei Gui also received the highest number of votes through the public voting segment conducted during the show which formed 50% of the final results, and emerged the overall champion of the competition.  

As the winner, Mei Gui walked away with a buffet spread of prizes totalling $20,000 worth of cash and items including: 

•    A Simmons Beautyrest Ace Plus Queen-sized mattress;
•    A OSIM uDream; 
•    A Powerhouse Karaoke Entertainment System; and
•    S$2,000 in cash.  

On her win, Gao Mei Gui 高美贵 said: “This journey's been like a dream, winning is like a dream! Too many people to thank and be grateful for. I’ll do that in time to come, but meanwhile, time to have a good sleep and a sinful meal!”

First runner-up Ridhwan and second runner-up Sherly Devonne Ng also went home each with a set of Powerhouse Karaoke Entertainment System priced at $1,899 and $1,499 respectively.

Other highlights of the evening included a surprise recording of top local singer JJ Lin 林俊杰 who visited the contestants previously to cheer them on, and a performance of the SPOP theme song 听我唱响 put together jointly by all eight SPOP WAVE! contestants. Guest judge Weibird Wei also performed his popular song Red Scarf 如果可以, while winner of the 2018 SPOP SING! singing competition Jarrell Huang 黃俊融 showcased his self-composed tune Chu Dian 触电.

SPOP WAVE! is part of Mediacorp’s SPOP initiative that first launched in 2018 with SPOP SING! (SPOP 听我唱). It aims to celebrate Singaporean music and discover local talents, while offering them the opportunity to showcase their musical passion through Mediacorp’s media network.
