Mediacorp clinches honours at 12th Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards

Singapore, 22 November 2021 – Mediacorp has earned two coveted dolphin trophies at the prestigious 12th Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards, announced in Cannes, France. Both awards went to CNA documentaries, with 23 bagging a Gold in the Human Concerns and Social Issues category, and Grounded taking a Silver in the Current Affairs category. Another documentary, The Mark of Empire, produced by IFA Media for CNA, was recognised as a Finalist in the Ethnology & Sociology category.

Filmed over six months, the documentary 23 showcases the difference that CNA brings to regional reporting and storytelling. Much of the coverage of Hongkong over the past two years has focused on the political conflicts and the high profile figures who have dominated in the territory’s political scene.

In contrast, 23 puts ordinary Hong Kongers front and centre of the narrative once again, by examining how five individuals who are a part of the Handover Generation navigate their lives amid turbulent changes in their home city. The documentary captures, in an unfiltered manner, the ideals, attitudes, and fears of Hong Kong’s residents, witnessing, first-hand, a social and political transformation occurring in their city. 23 is a compelling piece of journalism. It offers viewers a significantly deeper story, beyond the headlines, to help audiences Understand Asia.

Similarly, Grounded offers a previously untold behind the scenes look at the hundreds of planes grounded during the height of COVID-19. The in-depth look at the hard work of the engineers and maintenance crews across Asia was nothing short of eye-opening.

The Mark of Empire follows Singaporean curator and scholar Peter Lee as he explores the history of four Southeast Asian empires that made their mark on the world. Travelling from Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia to Indonesia, Peter explores ancient ruins, epic legends and vibrant traditions to chart the rise and fall of four distinct empires, and how their legacy still shapes cultures and identities in the region today.

Tham Loke Kheng, Chief Executive Officer, Mediacorp, said, “We are proud that our documentaries continue to receive plaudits on some of the most prestigious international stages such as the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards. These accolades are a validation of CNA’s commitment to bringing in-depth Asian perspectives to viewers by telling stories that are relevant, insightful and thought-provoking. Congratulations to the teams for a job well done!”

Established in 2010, the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards honours the best corporate films, online media productions, documentaries, and reports annually in Cannes, one of the world’s most important film centres. This year’s competition saw a total of 888 submissions from 42 countries.
