Mediacorp unveils island-wide “CNA Green Plan” to fuel sustainability awareness and action

Mediacorp has launched the CNA Green Plan, an island-wide campaign that shines a spotlight on sustainability issues, such as the impact of climate change on Singapore, energy consumption and securing a sustainable future for the country. Through a series of public engagement activities, the initiative also aims to inspire individuals in our communities to take the first steps towards going green.

A series of on-ground and online activities will encourage environment and climate change conversations and drive action in Singapore, transforming our little red dot into a bright green spark

Singapore, 16 December 2021 – Mediacorp has launched the CNA Green Plan, an island-wide campaign that shines a spotlight on sustainability issues, such as the impact of climate change on Singapore, energy consumption and securing a sustainable future for the country. Through a series of public engagement activities, the initiative also aims to inspire individuals in our communities to take the first steps towards going green.

The objectives of the CNA Green Plan are aligned with Mediacorp’s continued commitment as the national media network to inform and positively influence consumer action, in support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030. These educational efforts also complement Mediacorp’s priority in supporting green initiatives, as part of its corporate best practices and core corporate responsibility pillar of driving sustainability efforts through public engagement.

The first phase of the CNA Green Plan consists of on-ground and online challenges centred around the five pillars of the Singapore Green Plan 2030: (1) City in Nature, (2) Resilient Future, (3) Energy Reset, (4) Green Economy, and (5) Sustainable Living. These challenges will help participants better understand sustainability issues and encourage them to take action to reduce their carbon footprint.

Public participation and engagement details

Each of the five themes will be tackled by three towns for a total of 15 towns, with all residents of any town invited to partake in an assortment of activities associated with the five Singapore Green Plan 2030 pillars:

·       For on-ground challenges, the public can register their interest on the CNA Green Plan website before the event date. Slated to begin from 6 January 2022, these wide-ranging activities incorporate friendly competitive elements, such as pitting participants against each other in nature trails to track down specific species of flora and fauna . Other fun activities for the family include a half-day farming bootcamp, with mini challenges on how to grow your own vegetables at home and educating the public on local produce.

·       For online challenges, the public can create and post video and visual content related to the challenges on their social media platforms. To sweeten the deal and drive home the appeal of greener public commute, 45 individuals with the best online challenge entries will each stand a chance to score an EZ-link card containing $500 worth of credit. The online competition is open now and will end on 20 February 2022.

Mediacorp will also be drawing on its star power to light up public anticipation. Look out for a “showdown” featuring a luminous line-up of 15 familiar faces – five CNA presenters, five artistes from The Celebrity Agency, plus five Bloomr.SG influencers – who will be representing various towns and calling upon their “rivals” and residents in other towns to perform better in their respective online challenges.  Please refer to Annex A for the 15 towns and their related themes, and Annex B for the full list of online activities.

An ongoing sustainability journey

The on-ground challenges will be filmed and packaged into a special five-part series. Selected entries from the online challenges will also be incorporated into the series, scheduled for an April 2022 release. Other exciting engagement activities for subsequent phases of the CNA Green Plan will be announced in due course.

On the launch of the CNA Green Plan, Editor-in-Chief & Chief Sustainability Officer Walter Fernandez said: “This island-wide initiative is one of Mediacorp’s long-term efforts to raise awareness about sustainability as well as the related challenges and issues. As the national media network, we are uniquely positioned to leverage our broad base of creative capabilities, trusted journalism, and the wide reach of our personalities and platforms to bring communities together to act on the Singapore Green Plan. I hope our audiences can join us on our climate action mission, and that our efforts will motivate all of us to be more thoughtful about going green in our daily lives.”

The CNA Green Plan reflects Mediacorp’s multi-year focus on fostering public awareness and action aligned with the Singapore Green Plan 2030. In recent years, the company has expanded its efforts to drive conversations on climate change through sustained coverage across all of CNA’s platforms. Since August 2020, CNA has produced more than 30 hours of award-winning documentaries and news features on sustainability issues, including Asian Academy Creative Awards 2021 Best Cinematography and Best Infotainment Programme recipients, Wild City: River World and Climate Change: A Wicked Problem respectively. On the audio front, it has released 57 episodes of The Climate Conversations podcast, which have been streamed and downloaded 223,000 times [1]. More than 19 million page views have also been recorded for digital content on CNA’s sustainability section [2]. In April 2021, the CNA Leadership Summit 2021 – Green Recovery brought together political, business and community leaders to discuss the sustainable strategies and technologies required to reshape our economies and industries. Livestreamed to over 22,000 CNA YouTube viewers [3], the summit was also televised across two episodes to over 380,000 people on CNA Singapore [4].
