Mediacorp scores wins at prestigious international competitions

Singapore, 30 April 2020 – Mediacorp’s productions have received international acclaim, with a record haul of 62 accolades in total at the recent New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2020 and 21 at the World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards. A majority of the wins were for CNA documentaries, produced both in-house and in collaboration with independent production houses. These wins and honours reaffirm Mediacorp’s position as Singapore’s national media network and largest content creator, and a brand that is committed to producing trusted, quality content.

New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2020

Of the 62 accolades at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2020, Mediacorp bagged 28 Awards - six were Gold, 12 Silver, 10 Bronze - and 34 Finalist honours. The annual awards, which attracted entries from more than 50 countries this year, recognise the best in news, sports, documentary, information and entertainment programmes, including music videos, infomercials and feature films.

Clinching the UNDGC Gold award was CNA programme Tipping Point. The documentary delves into the topic of climate change, examining how the phenomenon could decimate the world’s resources and how societies, scientists and citizens worldwide are in a race for solutions. Tipping Point’s Gold is one of only three UNDGC awards, a collaboration between New York Festivals and the United Nations Department of Global Communications (UNDGC) to recognise programmes that exemplify the aims and ideas of the United Nations.

Becoming Human won Gold in the ‘Documentary – Science & Technology’ category. In the four-part documentary series which aired on CNA, comedic actor Chua Enlai examines artificial intelligence’s potential to become like us and transform humanity, how it is redefining love & relationships, expanding the boundaries of creativity and intelligence, recalibrating the international balance of power, and testing the limits of ethics, morality & spirituality.

World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards

In the World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards, Mediacorp took home 21 awards in total, comprising one Intermedia-globe Grand Award, 11 Gold and 9 Silver. The awards celebrate outstanding television and corporate media solutions from around the world, particularly audiovisual and online productions in the areas of information, education and entertainment.

Apart from documentaries, CNA productions in other genres were also recognised. We Are Gen Z (Episode 1) swept both the Intermedia-globe Grand Award and a Gold in the ‘Education: Professional Education’ category for its all-round examination of “Gen Z”, an emerging generation that is poised to steal the thunder from the world’s current obsession, Millenials. Episode 1 in particular looks at what would keep “Gen Zs” motivated at the work place, besides a fat pay cheque.

Current affairs programme Insight – India’s Crumbling Dynasty took Gold under the category ‘News: Current Events’. It trains the spotlight on India, the world’s largest democracy, and how the 135 year-old Congress Party, the main opposition force, faces extinction today on the back of its heavy defeat to the ruling BJP at the country’s recent election.

Tham Loke Kheng, Chief Executive Officer of Mediacorp, said: “The media industry has faced challenges, like many other sectors, brought about by the global COVID-19 outbreak. These wins serve as a strong motivation and reminder of our commitment to producing informative, insightful and thought-provoking content, which is needed more than ever now. My warmest congratulations to our production teams and partners who have worked hard to do us proud on the international stage.”
