Singapore, 5 March 2021 – The largest local Malay entertainment event Pesta Perdana 2021 concluded with a big bang as 30 awards were presented to the best talents and productions earlier this evening. Themed “Celebrating Artistic Excellence”, the 16th edition of the biennial show was held at The Theatre at Mediacorp, and paid homage to local talents who continue to produce excellent content despite the challenges during these unprecedented times.

The evening kicked off with an exciting opener by host Najip Ali and the 10 Most Popular Personality nominees, who performed “Malam Gemilang”. This was followed by a medley of exhilarating performances by popular singers Rahila Rashun, Ryan Sufiyan and Eka Mairina, while a poignant “In Memoriam” segment paid tribute to some of the brightest stars in the local Malay entertainment scene whom we have lost in the past two years.

In a special pre-recorded message, Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information & Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, congratulated all nominees for their exemplary work. Reflecting on the many challenges that COVID-19 has brought about, Mr Iswaran also expressed his appreciation for the efforts by the media industry in educating and entertaining viewers during these trying times.

On awards, the biggest winner of the night was Raksasa which bagged four wins in the following categories: Best Drama Special, Best Actor in a Leading Role – Drama Special/Anthology, Best Writing – Drama and Best Editing – Drama. A captivating fantasy-drama series, Raksasa impressed judges with its riveting plot and strong performances by the cast. In the newly introduced Best Audio Programme award aimed at honouring the best in local Malay radio, Tamu Warna: Espresso Warna won for its insightful yet light-hearted discussions of topics trending in the society.

Norman Ishak and Nurul Aini continued to triumph in the popularity categories as they were announced the Most Popular Male and Female Artiste respectively in these highly contested awards. A special Lifetime Achievement Award recipient was also presented to Mr Suhaimi Jais for his contributions to the local Malay entertainment industry, which includes producing notable productions such as Simfoni Layar Perak, the first Malay symphonic concert staged at the Esplanade, Muzika Extravaganza, an annual variety co-production with Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), as well as Bunga Tanjong, a miniseries that has received recognition in both international and regional awards. Previously Senior Vice President of Suria Network Programming and Promotions and Eaglevision Production, he is also known to many as “The Entertainment Man” for donning numerous hats during his extensive period in the media industry over the span of 45 years.
