Mediacorp to premiere special episode of Sesame Street at Pathlight School

Singapore, 10 April 2017 – Mediacorp’s okto, Singapore’s free-to-air channel for kids and sports, will premiere “Meet Julia”, a special episode of Sesame Street on 10 April 2017 in support of the autism community.

Julia is a new character on Sesame Street with autism, developed as part of an ongoing initiative by Sesame Workshop to serve all children and their families and increase awareness and understanding of autism. Introduced last year in digital form, Julia comes to life as a muppet in its latest season of the beloved children’s TV series.

Ms Debra Soon, Chief Customer Officer of Mediacorp said, “We are honoured that okto is the first channel in Asia to introduce Julia to our young television viewers.  As a dedicated channel for children, we believe in engaging our viewers with original and entertaining content to help develop curious minds, compassionate hearts and courageous spirits.”

Added Ms Soon, “We are committed to promote understanding and acceptance of autism in Singapore, and we hope that the screening of “Meet Julia” will get conversations going as to what more we can do as a society to help all children grow and lead happy lives."

“Bringing Julia to life as a Sesame Street Muppet is the centerpiece of all of our new materials to support families of children with autism,” said Sherrie Westin, EVP of Global Impact and Philanthropy, Sesame Workshop. “The response from the autism community to See Amazing in all Children has been extraordinary, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to promote understanding and acceptance of autism, as part of our mission of helping all children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.”

A special screening of the episode was held at Pathlight School on the afternoon of 10 April 2017 to about 200 students and educators from Pathlight School, Eden School, St Andrew’s Autism Centre, AWWA School, Rainbow Centre, as well as Townsville Primary School.  Besides being introduced to their new friend Julia, the students engaged in a sing-along session and were also given okto mementos and Julia activity sheets to round up the afternoon’s activities.

Mdm Valerie Chew, parent of a child at Pathlight School said, “We are delighted that Mediacorp and the school held this afternoon’s event. This was a real treat for our children. As a parent of a child with autism, my family and I can’t wait to catch the entire series of the new season of Sesame Street. ”

Ms Denise Phua, President of Autism Resource Centre (Singapore) said, “I would like to thank Mediacorp for being so thoughtful in extending this special screening to our students from Pathlight and fellow special needs schools, as well as from our mainstream partner school -Townsville Primary School. Such initiatives help to shine a spotlight on autism. I am delighted that Sesame Street is helping to raise awareness of autism and educating children from young to accept people of different abilities. It is my hope that more organisations can come onboard to embrace inclusion and celebrate abilities.”

"Meet Julia” aired on okto at 12.00pm on 10 April 2017, with repeat telecasts on the same day at 6pm and 8.30am on Sunday 16 April 2017.  Viewers can also watch the episode as catchup on Toggle.
