2011 Singapore Presidential Election Results programme reached nearly one million television viewers 

Singapore, 29 August 2011 – Nearly a million viewers tuned in to watch the 2011 Singapore Presidential Election – Results programme telecast on Channel NewsAsia “live” on polling night on 27 August 2011. The 7-hour programme of the election for the Republic’s 7th President was one of the top 10 programmes for MediaCorp for the year to date.  It reached almost one in four viewers aged 15 years and above.  

Channel NewsAsia presenters, Melissa Hyak and Sharon Tong fronted the programme, with studio guest, Ms Gillian Koh, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies, National University of Singapore.  Together with the team of reporters and crew on the ground, they provided the night’s “live” coverage, analysis and immediate interviews with the four Candidates at each mark of the tense-filled activities. The programme followed the action as the Candidates travelled between the counting centres, Elections Department and the assembly areas of their supporters. 

Online, channelnewsasia.com served nearly half a million (497,496) streams of the programme.  These included viewers watching from overseas from as far as Romania, Brazil, New York, Norway, Sweden, Canada and China. Some comments include:

“Watching from New York while hunkering down for a hurricane! Woooowweee! Thanks to S'pore Embassy for having the voting on friday, before hurricane arrives.”

The channel’s website (www.channelnewsasia.com) also saw a surge in page views. Registering some 3.8 million pageviews on 28 August 2011, it is 1.5 times of the daily average pageviews. The website had a special section on the Presidential Election, providing news, video clips and programmes produced by MediaCorp.
