August events draw strong viewership on TV and Toggle
Singapore, 2 September 2016 – August 2016 will go down as one of the most unforgettable months in Singapore’s history. Four significant events took place: The Rio 2016 Olympic Games where Joseph Schooling won Singapore’s first Olympic Gold medal, the 51st National Day Parade, the National Day Rally and the State Funeral of former President Mr S R Nathan. Mediacorp delivered these key experiences for the nation to its audiences through live and delayed telecasts on its free-to-air (FTA) channels and Toggle, its over-the-top service. For the four events, Mediacorp recorded over 11 million video views on Toggle and 3.6 million viewers on FTA television.
National Day Parade
MediaCorp's live and repeat coverage of National Day Parade (NDP) 2016 on TV reached more than 2.44 million viewers. Toggle registered about 168,000 video streams for NDP 2016 based on a combination of live, repeat and catch-up views.
National Day Rally
Over 1.87 million viewers tuned in to MediaCorp’s live coverage and highlights show of National Day Rally 2016. The rally also garnered over 150,000 Toggle video streams which included live coverage, highlights shows and catch-up while Channel NewsAsia’s facebook livestream recorded 482,000 video views.
Rio 2016 Olympic Games
More than 2.75 million viewers tuned in to the broadcast on okto, Mediacorp’s dedicated FTA channel for sports. On Toggle, over 10.6 million video views were recorded from 670,000 unique video viewers, for live and catch-up viewing. Throughout the duration of the Games, Channel NewsAsia posted 115 videos on its Facebook page that registered 18 million views.
Close to 440,000 viewers on okto witnessed history being made on 13 August 2016 as Joseph Schooling won Singapore’s first Olympic Gold and set a new Olympic record for the Men’s 100m butterfly event in Rio. Online, more than 130,000 video views of the phenomenal win were recorded on Toggle. Channel NewsAsia’s Facebook post of Joseph Schooling’s gold medal win also set a record for the most number of interactions in a single post at 137,700 interactions, including 104,500 Likes.
State Funeral for former President Mr S R Nathan
On Friday, 26 August Singapore bade farewell to Mr S R Nathan with a State Funeral Service. Over 900,000 viewers saw the live coverage on TV while close to 140,000 video views were streamed on Toggle for live and catch-up views, with Channel NewsAsia registering over 470,000 video views of its Facebook livestream.
