Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp salute Singapore’s birthday and resilient community spirit in an immersive National Day Concert special

20 July 2020 – An all-star assembly of local top talent will team up with Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp to bring the exhilarating Gardens experience to audiences at home via the Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp National Day Concert 2020.

The special concert is a toast to our nation’s 55th birthday, celebrating Singapore’s collective strength and steadfastness in combatting COVID-19. This collaboration between Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp also aims to bring our communities together via an entertainment special that emphasises a shared sense of belonging.

Graced by Guest-of-Honour President Halimah Yacob and Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee and anchored by performances filmed across Gardens by the Bay at lush iconic locales such as the Supertrees, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, the programme will premiere via Mediacorp's multiple platforms on 10 August at 8pm. Audiences can join in the jubilation from the comfort and safety of their homes.

President Halimah said: “Music can uplift the community and foster a shared sense of belonging during this challenging time. Despite COVID-19, I am glad that Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp remain dedicated to bringing the National Day Concert to Singaporeans. I hope this year’s concert will provide some encouragement and rally our diverse communities together as one people amidst the challenges ahead.”

Felix Loh, CEO, Gardens by the Bay, said: “We received amazing support for our inaugural edition last year with a record 60,000 turnout. While the unusual situation this year has meant not being able to hold a physical concert at the Gardens, it has not stopped colleagues from both organisations from bringing our national celebrations into the hearts, minds and homes of Singaporeans. As a national garden, Gardens by the Bay not only provides a green space for rest and recreation, but also serves as a community anchor to bring people together. This sense of unity and social cohesion must continue, come what may.”

Tham Loke Kheng, CEO, Mediacorp said: “Mediacorp is delighted to showcase the diversity of our amazing local talent in a second collaboration with Gardens by the Bay. We hope this feel-good concert will bring our communities together as we celebrate Singapore’s birthday, toast to the tenacity and strength of our community heroes, and commemorate the collective achievements of our country.”

Hosted by Jean Danker, highlights from the one-hour programme include an ebullient ensemble performance of Mediacorp’s “The Light”, an upbeat ditty produced by Mediacorp as part of national efforts to combat COVID-19 starring a constellation of Mediacorp celebrities such as Jarrell Huang, JJ Neo, Desmond Tan and Felicia Chin; as well as a rousing rendition of the all-time favourite National Day song “Home” by President Halimah Yacob and Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, who will be accompanied by performers of this year’s National Day Concert.

Audiences can also anticipate stellar performances by popular personalities such as Nathan Hartono, Taufik Batisah, Yung Raja and Inch Chua; plus side-splitting comedy acts courtesy of the inimitable Kumar, Gurmit Singh and Suhaimi Yusof. Also featured are inspirational stories of Gardens by the Bay staff who have pressed on and persevered in contributing to the community under COVID-19 conditions – serving as a reminder for all Singaporeans to stand in solidarity amidst adversity, so as to emerge even stronger as one.
