Singapore, 20 November 2018 – Mediacorp is pleased to announce the launch of Lights. Camera. Singapore, an initiative championing the cultural cornerstones that make us uniquely Singaporean.
Lights. Camera. Singapore is a curation of creative works reimagined for Mediacorp platforms to reach a wider audience. The initiative is aligned with the company’s aim of tapping the creative ecosystem beyond broadcasting. The collection of works includes stories, plays, movies and musicals.
Every Tuesday from 27 November 2018 at 10pm on Channel 5 and Toggle, Lights. Camera. Singapore celebrates content created for, by and with local talent, and cements Mediacorp’s commitment to spotlighting shared experiences – our people, places and parlance – via Singaporean storytelling.
“By reliving and reimagining familiar film and theatrical touchstones on multiple platforms, we hope to extend these experiences to a broader audience,” said Irene Lim, Chief Customer Officer, Mediacorp. “In the process, we are engendering pride and belonging through entertainment.”
Viewers can expect to enjoy a gamut of genres from the comfort of their couches, with all-new stage-to-screen adaptations of shows selected for their Singapore-centric sensibilities.
Case in point: The evolution and expansion of Dick Lee’s musical milestone Fried Rice Paradise into a full-fledged 13-part drama series, slated for telecast and over-the-top streaming from 2 July 2019.
“The upcoming iteration is centred on protagonist Choo Bee Lean in the 1980s, who is struggling to keep her father’s coffee shop afloat,” said Dick Lee. “Our national identity is something we must never take for granted, so I’m always mindful of imbuing my work with a sense of Singaporean-ness.”
Another highlight is a radical reworking of Michael Chiang’s Mixed Signals, a piquant play on the amusing and absurdist aspects of dating in the digital age.
“The humourous hijinks will be heightened for television,” said Michael Chiang on the 13-part dramedy set to air from 1 October 2019. “I want to introduce new characters that will allow for some truly unexpected sub-plots. Possibly throw in a song or two?”
Added Mr Chiang, “I hope this enterprise will escalate public support for the breadth of our creative talent, from the directors, actors and scriptwriters to the cameramen, art directors and sound and lighting designers.”
To kickstart Lights. Camera. Singapore, Mediacorp will screen 28 movies in collaboration with the Singapore Film Commission (SFC), an alliance announced earlier in October 2018 as part of the Singapore Media Festival’s celebration of Singapore films.
This medley of movies includes the free-to-air premiere of 7 Letters (2015) on 27 November 2018, an anthology of shorts by seven distinguished directors doubling as a poignant paean to our nation; POP AYE (2017) on 18 December 2018, a Singaporean-Thai film that owns the distinction of being both Kirsten Tan’s directorial debut and the first film selected to screen at the Sundance Film Festival, for which it won a Special Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition that year; and Ilo Ilo (2013) on 26 February 2019, an intimate family film that clinched the Caméra d'Or to become the first local feature to be lauded at the Cannes Film Festival.
“It's tremendously gratifying to be able to introduce my work to a fresh audience five years after its inception,” said Anthony Chen, director of Ilo Ilo. “I hope the touching tale will resonate with a new generation of Singaporean fans the way it has with viewers all around the world.”
“I like the idea of television and video audiences being dropped into a world without any expectations,” said Kirsten Tan. “I hope watching POP AYE on Channel 5 and Toggle will transport viewers on a journey that will make them reflect on and take stock of life.”
Added Ms Tan, “Some Singaporean audiences may be leery of local works due to a myriad of preconceived notions. Lights. Camera. Singapore has a part to play in debunking those myths and establishing an enduring bridge between local viewers and creators.”
“In a year where SFC celebrates its 20th anniversary and set-in-Singapore stories like A Land Imagined and Crazy Rich Asians are grabbing headlines around the world, there is much deserved attention on our filmmakers,” said Joachim Ng, Director, SFC. “SFC is happy to work with Mediacorp to present an exciting showcase of Singapore films on free-to-air TV as part of our 20th anniversary celebration.”
Added Mr Ng, “Films will continue to play an important role in reflecting our culture and telling Singapore’s stories to future generations. We hope that the showcase will get more Singaporeans to appreciate our rich film history as it gathers local and international recognition.”
