It Takes All of Us to make a difference
Singapore, 20 November 2017 – No kindness is wasted, no contribution too small. This is the message that the President's Star Charity (PSC), Mediacorp’s fundraiser under the President’s Challenge, wants to convey to Singaporeans at this year’s show.
The PSC, in its 24th year, is themed “It takes all of us”. Hosted by Gurmit Singh, Glenda Chong, Paul Foster and Kimberly Wang, it will be President Halimah Yacob’s first appearance on the show as Guest-of-Honour.
Opening the show is a performance by Singapore’s veteran artiste, Rahimah Rahim together with Orkestra Melayu Singapura. The Orkestra Melayu Singapura was formed in 1991 and is the only orchestra in Singapore to perform Malay music with traditional and modern instruments, as well as popular Western, Chinese and Indian music using traditional Malay instruments.
Next, popular Mediacorp artiste, Rebecca Lim showcases her musical chops by accompanying The TENG Ensemble on piano. The TENG Ensemble comprises a group of music educators, scholars and award-winning instrumentalists presenting refreshing and enigmatic music to young and old.
It will be a first for bubbly Mediacorp host Kym Ng as she teams up with Symphony 924’s Young Talents Project 2017 winners and a volunteer with Concern & Care Society (CCS), to bring new music to our ears.
Performing a nifty song and dance item with the beneficiaries from the Down Syndrome Association are Mediacorp’s social influencers comprising Jayley Woo, Bonnie Loo, Joel Choo, Richie Koh, Chen Yixi, Michelle Wong, Denise Tan, Desmond Ng and Nick Teo.
Fresh from winning our Vasantham Star 2017, the winners Swathi and Nandhitha will perform a song, ‘Train to Euston’, with Flame of the Forest, an instrumental world fusion music group that incorporates styles from other genres such as Indian Classical and Folk music to concoct a refreshing blend of music.
In an unusual combination, the Gunong Sayang Association teams up with Mediacorp artistes Pierre Png, Glenda Chong, Paige Chua and Paul Foster on a delicious dance item while serving traditional Peranakan desserts!
Headlining the international act is Grammy award winner Daniel Powter, a Canadian singer and songwriter best known for his self-penned hit, Bad Day, which spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
President Halimah Yacob says, “The President’s Star Charity is a valuable fund-raising platform to help the less fortunate in society. Over the years, it has inspired and rallied Singaporeans from all walks of life to come together to help others in need. I am heartened by the strong support and generosity of Singaporeans, and hope the spirit of giving continues in the years to come. Every member has a part to play in helping the community, and together we can build a more caring and inclusive society.”
Ms Debra Soon, Chief Customer Officer, Mediacorp says, “Giving back to the community is something that Mediacorp strongly believes in. The PSC is where we leverage Mediacorp’s media assets, production expertise, star power and social influencers to spotlight the worthy causes under the President’s Challenge. Through the show we hope that Singaporeans will be better informed of the needs of our broader society and make a difference by giving of their time, effort and money.”

About President’s Star Charity
Mediacorp produced the first President’s Star Charity (PSC) Show in 1994, based on an idea by the late former President Ong Teng Cheong to promote artistic talent and contribute to charity at the same time. In 2000, the PSC was consolidated to become part of the President’s Challenge, an annual series of events by organisations to raise funds for charities chosen by the President. PSC is Mediacorp’s contribution to the President’s Challenge and by far, its most visible and effective contribution.
