MediaCorp announces consolidation strategy for publishing division

Singapore, September 16, 2008
- MediaCorp has announced changes to consolidate its publishing portfolio, and fresh efforts for its magazines to go beyond print.

To reflect changing demographics and advertising trends, MediaCorp's publishing division will cease publication of four titles as of their October issues.

They are Vanilla, Kids Company, Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), and Lime. The company, however, is considering bringing some back as online editions.

In addition, Style:Living, the company's quarterly decor title, will become a bi-annual supplement packaged with Style Weddings, a move that will complement and strengthen the hugely popular bridal magazine.

Ms Zita Ong, Managing Director of MediaCorp's publishing division, said: "The affected titles are our niche publications. While it is sad to see them go, the move will allow the company to focus its resources on growing our other magazines, as well as launching new ones and entering into new ventures. This is a 'rightsizing' initiative which will make us even more robust in the medium term."

She added: "Our core businesses remain strong. The company’s flagship titles,
8 DAYS, i-weekly, STYLE, ELLE, FHM and ARENA continue to perform well; our contract publishing division has seen double digit growth year on year and our licensing and distribution business continues to flourish."

In the last year, MediaCorp acquired the rights to publish and distribute seven new licensed children's titles. It is also a major distributor, handling more than a million copies of its own as well as third party magazines and newspapers monthly.

The publishing division will also be launching a TV initiative in the near future, underlying its commitment to go beyond print.

Said Ms Ong: "The editors of our fashion and lifestyle magazines are recognized as authorities in their respective fields. So it makes perfect sense to get them to dispense grooming tips and fashion advice on air on a regular basis."

There are also plans to develop new web based initiatives. Currently, content from 8 Days is available to readers via MediaCorp's EasyReader, a free software which synchronises and downloads content from any internet connection . The software, which enables readers to enjoy their favourite magazines on the go, is the result of a partnership between MediaCorp, E-Books System and Microsoft. Believed to be the first in this part of the world, it is akin to the Reader software available for New York Times.
