Singapore, 8 April 2009 – MediaCorp, spearheaded by Channel NewsAsia, has been appointed an official media partner for the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. Channel NewsAsia will be the platform to broadcast the events and activities of the Expo, expected to be one of the largest events on the global calendar next year. The channel’s reach will help bring awareness of the Expo, which takes place from 1 May to 31 October 2010, to 22 territories in Asia.

A signing ceremony to mark the partnership between MediaCorp and Shanghai World Expo was held on 8 April 2009. It was witnessed by Ms Zhong Yanqun, Deputy Director of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai Executive Committee (钟燕群, 上海世博会执委会专职副主任) and Mr Yip Wei Kiat, Singapore’s Consul-General in Shanghai (叶伟杰, 新加坡驻上海总领事). The agreement was signed by Mr Clifton Yong, MediaCorp’s Executive Vice President, (杨仪东, 新传媒集团执行副总裁), and Mr Zhu Yonglei, the Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination (朱咏雷, 上海文广局局局长, 上海世博局副局长).

In his keynote address, Mr Song Chao, Deputy Director of the Propaganda Department of the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China, and Director of the Information Office of the Shanghai Municipality (宋超, 中共上海市委宣传部副部长, 上海市政府新闻办公室主任) said MediaCorp’s appointment will allow the Expo to harness MediaCorp’s influence in Asia to effectively promote the Shanghai World Expo overseas. Mr Lucas Chow, CEO of MediaCorp (周永强, 新传媒集团总裁), who also spoke at the event, added that MediaCorp places great importance on the collaboration and is pleased to be able to use the media company’s many diverse platforms, and its reach in Asia, to promote the Expo.
Channel NewsAsia will provide concerted news coverage and special reports of the activities related to the mega exposition, in a year-long commitment. These include a weekly infotainment programme, called Expo Connections, to be screened from May 2009. The highly popular Channel NewsAsia Edutour will be customised to the Expo. This involves bringing a group of 30 students from Singapore to Shanghai in June 2009, where they will be among the first members of the public to get an inside look at workings of the Expo, and gain an insight into the 200 over countries and international organisations taking part in the event. MediaCorp will also work jointly with the Expo on a programme featuring Singapore and Shanghai entertainers.

Ms Debra Soon, Managing Director of Channel NewsAsia says, “This is a landmark event for the channel, and is especially significant as we celebrate Channel NewsAsia’s 10th Anniversary this year. We are honoured to be able to work with Shanghai World Expo on such a global event and are confident that this will prove interesting for viewers across Asia, as over 70 million visitors are expected to take part in the Expo.”

The theme of the Expo is “Better City, Better Life” and signifies Shanghai’s new status in the 21st Century as a major economic and cultural centre. It aims to explore the full potential of urban life with new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. Visitor numbers are expected to hit 70 million from within China and abroad. This would make it the largest number of visitors in the history of the world expos.
