MediaCorp donates $200,000 for Sichuan disaster relief

Singapore, 23 May 2008 – MediaCorp and its staff will be donating $200,000 to help the victims of the earthquake disaster in Sichuan province, China.

The money will be disbursed to various Chinese agencies through the Chinese embassy in Singapore to help with the disaster relief, in particular, children made homeless or orphaned by the unfortunate event.

Mr Lucas Chow, MediaCorp Chief Executive Officer, says, “With our long-standing relations and business partnerships in China, we want to show that we care, hence, our monetary contribution. As a company, we pledged $100,000 as seed money and started a staff donation drive - with a further commitment to match the staff’s contribution, dollar for dollar. I am happy to announce that collectively, we have raised $200,000.

As a media company we have a very important role to play, by keeping our audiences informed and updated on developments in China. By raising awareness and highlighting issues, we encourage the public to lend support and assistance, whether it’s by volunteering or donations."

MediaCorp will stage a charity show on Sunday, 25 May 2008 to be televised "live" on Channel 8. Over 70 MediaCorp and Asian artistes will participate in the show. All donations received will be handed over to the Chinese embassy in Singapore, in aid of the Sichuan earthquake victims.
