Singapore, 27 September 2019 – Set to steam up smart screens everywhere is Mediacorp’s new M18-rated Toggle Originals English-language drama Last Madame, a saga sizzling with sexual intrigue, scheming spies and show-stopping suspense.
The provocative premise of Last Madame is part of Mediacorp’s strategy of expanding the scope of its content so as to cater to an ever-growing adult audience.
Shrouded with secrets, the thrilling tale toggles between past and present. The present-day plotline follows steely-hearted stockbroker Chi Ling (played by Fiona Fussi) and her attempts to reclaim a ramshackle shophouse in Singapore. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that the heritage house was a brothel in the 1930s, owned by Chi Ling’s formidable great-grandmother Fung Lan (Joanne Peh), the titular last madame of the series.
Joanne’s A-list appeal is enhanced by an electrifying ensemble cast composed of vaunted veterans like Lina Ng, who plays Fung Lan’s astute ally Ah Yoke; and Brandon Wong as Lou Seh, the cutthroat chief of a secret society.
Capping off the colourful characters in both past and present plotlines are the combative courtesan Siu Lan, dogged detective Inspector Mak, heroic history geek Guo Wen and brilliant banker Harry – played by Crazy Rich Asians actress Constance Lau plus up-and-comers Jeff Chou, Ky Tan and Alan Wan respectively. The inclusion of these promising next-gen performers exemplifies Mediacorp's commitment to nurture newcomers in Singapore and beyond.
Last Madame was developed by writer Adeline Foo and subsequently backed by IMDA-funded initiatives. Said initiatives are aimed at pushing the boundaries of storytelling and empowering producers to excel in core components of productions such as story planning, scriptwriting, set design, makeup and music. Both IMDA and Mediacorp jointly greenlit the concept for this series.
Last Madame is produced by Ochre Pictures, a production company known for its production excellence in high-quality television programmes and films, and is a prominent part of the broader creative ecosystem that Mediacorp collaborates with.
Sapna Angural, Head, English Audience, Mediacorp said: “This exciting exercise in creativity has culminated in an unprecedented undertaking unlike anything on the local market right now. Last Madame reinforces Mediacorp’s role as a forward-thinking force in Singapore storytelling.”
