MediaCorp kicks off paid digital subscriptions of Style:
- Singapore’s first interactive digital magazine
Singapore, 21 October 2010 – MediaCorp will be launching Singapore’s first interactive digital magazine with the November edition of Style:, with more titles to follow.
Style: on iPad will be a paid digital magazine that goes beyond the printed version, with video content and additional product information. Readers will be able to buy the digital edition at an introductory price of USfirstname.lastname@example.org from the Apple store, available from 30 October 2010.
"We’d like to offer users a new experience, though the brand will be quintessentially Style: The digital magazine will be highly interactive, not just a PDF version of the hard copy, or a static format that you normally see online," says Ms Jessie Sng, Managing Director of MediaCorp’s Publishing division, at the launch of Style: Week 2010, where the September sampler was shown to advertisers and partners.
Future editions of digital Style: could include e-commerce, riding on a worldwide trend where users not only read about fashion, but also buys items featured online. Also, MediaCorp says readers can download free back copies once the November issue hits the Apple Store.
After Style:, MediaCorp intends to launch more digital products specifically for media tablets from its stable of publications, including 8 Days and the popular TODAY newspaper.
"Surveys have found that digital magazines are more engaging, with readers spending 20-30 minutes versus just eight-nine minutes for magazine websites. Readers also generally pay more attention to display ads in digital magazines than they do online. These are positive developments for the publishing business, and MediaCorp is poised to ride this wave," says Mr Shaun Seow, Deputy CEO of MediaCorp’s news, radio, print and interactive businesses.
"With the popularity of media tablets like iPad, as well as how users have taken to digital magazines, we expect electronic sales of our publications to take up as much as 20% of total sales within five years," says Mr Seow.
Ms Selina Ang, Marketing & Communications Manager of Cortina Watch Pte Ltd says, "there is a good reason why digital is all the rage now – pictures are sharp, colours are vibrant, and content can be interactive. From videos to location maps to web links, these added dimensions could make digital advertising an interesting marketing channel. "
Style: readership has been growing year on year, garnering close to 40,000 readers (AC Nielsen, 2009). This increase is bolstered by marquee events like Style: Week 2010, the second of its kind following a very success first run last year. This year's lineup includes more shopping privileges, exclusive promotion deals and workshops from 20 to 31 Oct 2010 only at ION Orchard. It will then end with a spectacular 2 day fashion show -"Style: on the streets", featuring a plethora of brands housed within ION.
