MediaCorp operates ION Orchard’s screens

Singapore, 31 July 2009 – MediaCorp has been appointed by ION Orchard shopping mall to operate all its digital screens, heralding a new era in Singapore’s out-of-home (OOH) viewing experience. The screens include one of the largest LED video displays overlooking Singapore’s prime shopping district, as well as smaller formats numbering over 100 spread over eight floors in ION Orchard.

MediaCorp plans to inject fresh, relevant content into the screens, leveraging on its plethora of television, radio and print platforms. Tips on shopping, dining, fashion and IT will feature prominently, while MediaCorp’s international news channel, Channel NewsAsia, will keep shoppers abreast of breaking news. There are plans for interactive content, such as allowing shoppers to send mobile text or even video messages for display on the screens.

In addition, the screens will feature advertisements to be sold by MediaCorp’s newly established OOH Media division. MediaCorp sees outdoor advertising as a growth area for its business, and will be building up inventory in this space in the coming months.

ION’s outdoor LED screen was switched on this evening (31 July) at a star-studded ceremony by the CEOs of CapitaLand and MediaCorp, Messrs Liew Mun Leong and Lucas Chow respectively. CapitaLand, together with Hongkong’s Sun Hung Kai Properties, owns ION.

"This strategic partnership with Mediacorp presents an excellent opportunity for ION Orchard to make a difference in media communications within a retail mall and on Orchard Road" said Ms Soon Su Lin, Chief Executive of Orchard Turn Developments, the mall’s developer. "By incorporating cutting-edge technology into various facets of the mall design and supported by MediaCorp's expertise in managing and providing content, including for advertising, it brings a whole new dimension to the shopping experience in Orchard Road. The prominent digital screen on ION2 will become a focal point for everyone's enjoyment with the broadcast of live events, up to dates news and activities not just from within the mall, but from all over the world."

Mr Shaun Seow, MediaCorp’s Deputy CEO, said: “MediaCorp is honoured to partner ION Orchard, a truly iconic endeavour, and will strive to deliver the gold standard in outdoor video displays, drawing on our expertise in content creation. Once people find a reason to look at our screens, our value proposition to advertisers becomes very clear. Advertisers will be able to reach the thousands of people passing through ION every day, and the screens will be a great platform to reach them. This on-the-move audience will complement those already on our TV channels, radio stations and publications. So going into the OOH media business will strengthen MediaCorp’s position as Singapore’s leading media company, providing a one-stop advertising solution to our clients.”

Based on The Nielsen Company’s Advertising Expenditure, outdoor advertising spending has shown strong growth in the last few years, with its share of the local pie doubling from 5% 5 years ago to 10% now. And with Singaporeans increasingly spending time out of home, the research firm foresees that outdoor advertising will continue to grow.
