Mediacorp racks up Grand Award and other impressive wins at World Media Festivals

CNA wins acclaim for coverage of landmark Trump-Kim Summit and other news and current affairs events

Singapore, 16 May 2019 – Mediacorp has won a total of 14 awards at this year's prestigious World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards ceremony, held in Hamburg, Germany. The six Gold and seven Silver awards – its largest haul of awards to date at the global competition – were for news and documentary programmes produced in-house as well as in collaboration with external production companies.

From its inception in 2000, the World Media Festivals has been honouring the best in television, corporate film, print and online content from around the world. In particular, its Television & Corporate Media Awards celebrates outstanding television and corporate media solutions on an international scale. These include audiovisual and online productions from areas such as information, education and entertainment.

Of the six Gold awards, one was conferred on Mediacorp’s CNA news platform in the category of ‘News: Breaking News Coverage’ for its reporting of the historic DPRK-USA Singapore Summit (submitted as the Trump-Kim Summit) in June 2018. CNA was responsible for providing timely, round-the-clock coverage of the Summit’s momentous events to consumers in Singapore and the region.

In a nod to CNA’s unrivalled understanding of all things Asia, the platform also picked up Gold awards for its thorough, insightful analyses of India’s caste conflict (on Insight, a CNA documentary) and Myanmar’s Rohingya refugee crisis in the ‘Documentary: Society & Social Issues’ and ‘News: Current Events’ categories, respectively. Insight – India Caste Conflict was also named a Grand Award winner, one of the highest accolades in the competition.

Singapore After Dark, produced in partnership with Peddling Pictures, clinched Gold for CNA in the category ‘Documentaries: Lifestyle’. Using new night-sensitive cameras, the documentary takes viewers on a jaunt across the island from dusk till dawn to meet some unique Singaporeans who reveal themselves only at night. Through the programme’s lens, viewers are able to see the places they live, work and play in an entirely different light.

“It is an immense honour to see CNA’s productions continue to receive plaudits on the international stage. Particularly when the world’s eyes were trained on the Trump-Kim Summit last year, our entire CNA newsroom did Singapore proud by sparing no effort to ensure that we delivered the news quickly, accurately and objectively. In all, these awards garnered at the World Media Festivals 2019 recognise several firsts for CNA and demonstrate its rich creative talent and production capabilities,” said Ms Tham Loke Kheng, Chief Executive Officer, Mediacorp.

“Mediacorp’s entries have always contributed to setting a standard at the WorldMediaFestivals.  Versatile, informative and quality production are amongst Mediacorp’s characteristics," said Ms Sara Chinbuah, Director of World Media Festivals.
