MediaCorp’s SG50: The Gift of Song

Vote for your favourite song and decide on our gift to the nation

Singapore, 07 January 2015 – MediaCorp today unveiled the three finalists’ songs from SG50: The Gift of Song, a song-writing competition organised by MediaCorp to celebrate the nation’s 50th birthday. The songs will be put to a vote by the public between 8 January and 1 March 2015.  The winning song will be presented to all Singaporeans to sing along in the weeks leading up to National Day in August 2015.

Each of the three finalists’ song has been made into a music video (MV) featuring winners from MediaCorp’s talent shows: Alfred Sim, Channel U’s Project SuperStar; Farisha Ishak, Channel 5’s The Final 1 and Shabir, Vasantham’s Vasantham Star.  The MVs will be shown on MediaCorp’s television channels, Out-Of-Home (OOH) screens and over-the-top service Toggle while the songs will be played across MediaCorp’s radio stations.

Public voting can be done via telephone (see table below) or the Toggle website, and makes up 60 percent of the overall scores.  The composer for the winning song will receive a cash prize of $10,000.  MediaCorp will also produce a grand-scale MV of the winning song, to be released in the lead-up to National Day Parade 2015.

Bernard Lim, Managing Director, TV, MediaCorp said, “The panel of judges had a very tough time shortlisting the finalists as there were so many good entries received for The Gift of Song.  It is now down to three choices and we are now counting on Singaporeans to tell us which one of the three songs is their favourite. Your votes will determine our best gift to Singaporeans on our nation’s birthday.”

In addition to The Gift of Song, MediaCorp has also organised the following programmes to celebrate SG50 with the nation:

  • “Design-A-Tee” SG50 tee-shirt competition, with the winning designs available for purchase at all Denizen outlets.
  • Celebrate SG50, the biggest countdown show on 31 December 2014 celebrating Singapore’s past 50 years of pop culture.

MediaCorp donated $100,000 of the show’s proceeds to Singapore Red Cross to support its efforts in protecting human life and dignity, relieving human suffering and responding to disasters.

  • SG Care & Share Day on Sunday, 25 January @ Sports Hub. Jointly organised by MediaCorp and the Community Chest, this is the first CSR activity in the SG50 calendar of events.  SG Care & Share Day aims to be THE volunteer event for Singaporeans and Singapore residents, with the biggest gathering of beneficiaries, volunteers and members of the public in one venue.

Singapore’s history will also be retold as Channel NewsAsia presents a full-year’s lineup of television programmes including the untold story of Stamford Raffles and documentaries charting Singapore’s transformation from a young nation to a first-world country.  MediaCorp’s other television channels – Channel 5, 8, U, Suria, Vasantham, okto - will also feature “infotainment” shows about Singapore’s history including We are Singaporeans and documentaries, The Malay Pioneers and The School Bell Rings.
