NEA-MediaCorp raises another $370,000 for environmental and social causes
Singapore, 4 October 2010 –This year’s Semakau Run, jointly organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA) and MediaCorp, has received support from 36 donors that have pledged a total of S$370,000 to support the environmental and charitable groups.
Organised as part of the Clean & Green Singapore programme, the annual Semakau Run symbolises the close partnership that NEA has fostered with the business and public communities to work towards the common goal of long-term sustainable development for Singapore. It is also a platform for NEA to galvanise the business communities to demonstrate their commitment towards environmental protection.
Partnering with MediaCorp for the second time, Semakau Run 2010 has also increased its beneficiaries to seven from six in 2009. The beneficiaries include four environmental NGOs, namely the Singapore Environment Council (SEC), Restroom Association Singapore (RAS), Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA), and Nature Society Singapore (NSS) as well as two social service charities, namely, Rainbow Centre – Yishun Park School and HCA Hospice Care. There was also a special one-off fund raising for the Amalgamated Union of Public Daily Rated Workers (AUPDRW).
These environmental NGOs and social service charities will be using the funds to develop, improve and sustain their community outreach programmes and social services, so as to encourage the public to embrace environmental responsibility as well as to improve the quality of life for the less fortunate. The funds raised for AUPDRW will be used to support the education, training and welfare programmes for their workers and family members.
Mr Andrew Tan, Chief Executive Officer of National Environment Agency, said, "NEA and MediaCorp share the same corporate philosophy in promoting greater care and ownership for the environment and our society. The two are synonymous. You cannot have one without the other in our journey towards a more liveable global city. The Semakau Run brings these two elements together."

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources LG (NS) Desmond Kuek will be flagging off the race at Semakau Landfill, the world’s first-of-its-kind offshore landfill which has been a success story of sustainable waste management in co-existence with a vibrant ecosystem and rich biodiversity. Participants can choose between two Competitive Runs (5km and 2.5km) and Fun Walk (1.5km), and engage in a line-up of recreational activities around the landfill.
