SG50 Design-A-Tee contest: Top five winning designs unveiled

Singapore, 18 December 2014 – MediaCorp launched the Design-A-Tee contest in November with the support of Denizen and SG50 and received an overwhelming response from all walks of life. Similar to 'The Gift of Song' song-writing competition which is part of the SG50 celebratory initiatives, MediaCorp was able to rally Singaporeans together through a design contest to unearth the definitive Singapore t-shirt which is designed by Singaporeans for Singaporeans.

From 1,600 entries received in the 'Design-A-Tee' contest, the judges shortlisted 20 for the public to vote. And now the top five SG50 winning t-shirt designs have emerged, with the top design going to 'Makan Till Shiok!' by Lim Hang Kwong, 31, a freelance concept designer.

Mr Lim Hang Kwong’s winning design portrayed Singapore's image as a food paradise and attempted to draw as many local iconic dishes as he could on the t-shirt. He explained: "The food theme highlights Singapore's diverse food culture. I initially wanted to draw 50 food varieties to commemorate SG50 but I realised that 50 were not enough. I also gave a local slang 'Makan Till Shiok!' as the slogan which Singaporeans can relate to, while the dialect names of the dishes give it a local feel." For winning the first prize, Mr Lim Hang Kwong received $8,000 cash and $2,000 worth of Denizen vouchers.

The four consolation prizes go to:

- Sharon Goh, 35, associate creative director for 'Calendar countdown'

- Alvin Mah, 31, designer for 'Let's ride the next wave'

- Carin Leong, 17, Shawn Chia, 18 and Chia Lin, 43 for 'Our little red dot'

- Lim Ing, 15, student for 'Our vibrant culture’

The four consolation prize winners won $1,000 cash and $1,000 worth of Denizen vouchers each.

One of the judges Ms Christina Chua, MediaCorp Senior Vice President of Marketing & Sales Planning said: "All the 5 top winning designs are visually impressive in telling a uniquely Singapore story. The winners clearly created a meaningful and memorable gift to our nation on its Golden Jubilee through their creativity. Congratulations to all winners."

The winning designs will be officially unveiled by MediaCorp artistes at the Celebrate SG50 Countdown show on 31 December 2014 at Marina Bay Floating Platform. Concert-goers will have the opportunity to buy their favourite design on site at the Denizen booth at a special price of $15 per piece with 10% of the proceeds going to charity. The five winning tee-shirts will be available for sale at all Denizen stores at $19.90 per piece or $13.90 for purchases of two pieces and above.  Look out for details for a special SG50 tee-shirt autograph signing session with MediaCorp artistes at a Denizen store in 2015.
