Singaporeans have chosen MediaCorp’s “gift of song” to the nation

Singapore, 14 April 2015 – These Are The Days” by songwriter Lee Chin Sin is the winning song entry for SG50: The Gift of Song, a song-writing competition organised by MediaCorp to celebrate the nation’s 50th birthday.

One of three finalist’s songs, “These Are The Days” emerged the winning song from over 65,000 votes cast during the seven weeks of voting that began on 8 January. The other two finalist songs are “Being Here” and “We Are Stars”.

The winning song will be made into a music video showcasing Singaporeans from all walks of life. The music video will also feature winners from MediaCorp’s talent shows: Farisha Ishak, Channel 5’s The Final 1, Shabir, Vasantham’s Vasantham Star and Alfred Sim, Channel U’s Project SuperStar. Other performing artistes in this grand music video include Tay Ke Wei, regional song composer/singer, Julie Tan, MediaCorp’s artiste, Sufie Rashid, first runner-up of SG Mania, Suria’s reality singing competition, the award-winning local musicians, the Lorong Boys and the talented Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir.

The music video will be broadcast across MediaCorp’s television channels, Out-Of-Home (OOH) screens and over-the-top service Toggle while the songs will be played across MediaCorp’s radio stations, in the lead-up to National Day 2015.

Song-writer Lee Chin Sin said, “This journey has been truly incredible for me - I feel overwhelmed and, more than anything else, extremely proud to call Singapore my home and am so grateful to be given the chance to contribute to the SG50 celebrations! When I wrote the song, I just wanted to convey the sense of positivity and optimism I myself felt as we approach our 50th birthday as a nation. I sincerely hope that this message resonates with people when they listen to These Are The Days!” said Lee Chin Sin.

Added Mr Lee, “On another level, as an aspiring songwriter, it is a dream come true to witness the song brought to life through MediaCorp's production and such a committed and moving interpretation by the wonderful Farisha Ishak. I am also deeply honoured to have shared this experience with like-minded music lovers and am particularly grateful for the chance to get to know and become friends with the other finalists Andrew, Jared and Dennis.”

Other initiatives by MediaCorp to celebrate SG50 include “Design-A-Tee” SG50 tee-shirt competition, Celebrate SG50 countdown show and SG Care and Share Day.

Fans’ Video Contest

As an extension to the song writing competition, MediaCorp is organising The Gift of Song Fans’ Video Contest to let Singaporeans and Permanent Residents create “Fan-Made” video based on the winning song, “These Are The Days”. Singaporeans can submit their music videos from 15 April to 4 May to toggle.sg/thegiftofsong. The selected music videos will be put to a vote by the public between 7 to 24 May and the three most popular works win $500 cash each.
