Singapore, 12 November 2018 – SPOP SING! proved to be a resounding hit with more than 1.7 million1 viewers who tuned in to the exciting competition on Mediacorp’s free-to-air Channel 8 since it first aired on 9 August 2018. The 10-episode show, including audition short clips released from June 2018, received over 816,000 video views on Toggle as a further testament to its immense popularity with the young and tech-savvy audience.
As the first nationwide talent competition under the SPOP initiative, SPOP SING! was launched to uncover fresh local voices and provide a platform for these budding artistes to showcase their talents. With contestants having to only perform songs that are locally written, composed or arranged, SPOP SING! also helped to heighten awareness of local music compositions and celebrate Singapore music.
For the past 3 months, 20 young contestants battled it out for a chance to be crowned the inaugural SPOP SING! champion. This culminated in the Grand Final held at the Padang2, where 18 year-old Jarrell Ng eventually clinched the title in front of an ecstatic 8,000-strong crowd.
Irene Lim, Chief Customer Officer, Mediacorp, said: “We are very excited and encouraged that the inaugural edition of SPOP SING! has received such great support and love from our audience, proving once again the influence and appeal of local music and talent. I would also like to congratulate and thank our young contestants for their stellar performances throughout the competition, and hope they inspire others to pursue their passion for music. Through SPOP, we will continue to celebrate Singapore music, spot and nurture the next generation of homegrown talents.”
Beyond just a reality TV programme, SPOP SING! offers these budding singers multiple platforms (TV, radio, digital, and on-ground) to showcase themselves, as well as access to opportunities beyond Singapore. The champion Jarrell Ng walked away with $30,000 cash, a debut song “Wings of Pride” specially composed by Lee Wei Song for the occasion and a co-management contract from Mediacorp and WISE Music, helmed by Singapore music veterans, Lee Si Song and Lee Wei Song.
Doreen Neo, Chief Content Officer, Mediacorp, said “Through SPOP SING!, Jarrell has consistently proved to be a very talented singer with huge potential. But more than that, he has also demonstrated his mass appeal by winning the votes of the audience in the last round of the competition. Together with WISE Music, Mediacorp will groom and market Jarrell locally and overseas, and we are optimistic that Jarrell will make a name for himself in the regional music scene.”
