SPOP SING! scores with more than 1.7 million viewers and close to 1 million video views

Singapore, 12 November 2018 – SPOP SING! proved to be a resounding hit with more than 1.7 million1 viewers who tuned in to the exciting competition on Mediacorp’s free-to-air Channel 8 since it first aired on 9 August 2018. The 10-episode show, including audition short clips released from June 2018, received over 816,000 video views on Toggle as a further testament to its immense popularity with the young and tech-savvy audience.

As the first nationwide talent competition under the SPOP initiative, SPOP SING! was launched to uncover fresh local voices and provide a platform for these budding artistes to showcase their talents. With contestants having to only perform songs that are locally written, composed or arranged, SPOP SING! also helped to heighten awareness of local music compositions and celebrate Singapore music. 

For the past 3 months, 20 young contestants battled it out for a chance to be crowned the inaugural SPOP SING! champion. This culminated in the Grand Final held at the Padang2, where 18 year-old Jarrell Ng eventually clinched the title in front of an ecstatic 8,000-strong crowd.

Beyond just a reality TV programme, SPOP SING! offers these budding singers multiple platforms (TV, radio, digital, and on-ground) to showcase themselves, as well as access to opportunities beyond Singapore. The champion Jarrell Ng walked away with $30,000 cash, a debut song “Wings of Pride” specially composed by Lee Wei Song for the occasion and a co-management contract from Mediacorp and WISE Music, helmed by Singapore music veterans, Lee Si Song and Lee Wei Song.

All episodes of SPOP SING! can be viewed on Toggle video-on-demand at toggle.sg/spopsing. Songs performed by the 20 contestants have also been compiled into a special SPOP Sing! Original Soundtrack (OST) and are available for streaming or downloading on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, KKBox, Deezer and Singapore telcos’ digital music stores.
