The President’s Star Charity 2008 Celebrates the Singapore Cabaret

Singapore, 2 October 2008
– The President’s Star Charity 2008 (PSC) goes back in time to present classic pieces from the past, cabaret-style! As the premier fund-raising event of the President’s Challenge, PSC will be telecast live on Channel 5 on Sunday, 12 October, 7:30pm. Proceeds from the show will go directly to the 31 charities supported by the President’s Challenge (see Annex A).

Based on the theme President’s Star Charity 2008 Celebrates the Singapore Cabaret, the producers have assembled a stellar cast including stars from the sixties such as Anneke Gronloh and Veronica Young. Scoring a first this year is the live music element by the Thomson Big Band. Bollywood actor Jas Arora makes a special appearance, supported by a bevy of dancers from the Global Indian International School, while Taufik Batisah puts on the Ritz with young tap dancers JazzKids. Meanwhile, Gurmit Singh, Tay Ping Hui and Daren Tan will helm a Frank Sinatra medley, while Mathilda D’Silva, Vanessa Fernandez and Olinda Cho take on The Supremes. (For a full list of performers and items, kindly refer to Annex B).

As a special treat for viewers and donors, President Nathan will perform a special item, accompanied by the T’ang Quartet and supported by Cultural Medallion winner Tan Kian Por.

The hosts for this year’s show are Adrian Pang and Michelle Chia.

His Excellency President S R Nathan says, “Since the inception of the President’s Challenge in 2000, this annual charity extravaganza has been a highlight of the President's Challenge each year. And year after year, I have been very encouraged by the generosity of Singaporeans. I must express my appreciation to the MediaCorp artistes and staff who have devoted much time and effort to make PSC such a memorable event in our calendar of charitable endeavours. It is my belief that everyone can offer a helping hand, whether you are young or old, well-to-do or not. I encourage Singaporeans to do their part - either by donating or volunteering - to help those among us, who are less fortunate, live a dignified life and play a more meaningful role in society.”

Mr Lucas Chow, MediaCorp CEO, says: “This is the ninth year that MediaCorp is producing PSC. Year after year, PSC has received enormous support from our viewers and we are honoured that we have a part to play in the President’s Challenge.

The President’s Star Charity 2008 will be shown ‘live’ on MediaCorp TV Channel 5 on Sunday, 12 October 2008 from 7:30pm to 10pm. The encore will telecast on Channel 5 on Saturday, 18 October from 5.15pm to 7:45pm.
