The ETC (闲杂人等) crowned the winner of Mediacorp’s Battle Of The Buskers competition!

After months of intense competition, The ETC (闲杂人等) made up of 47-year-old Tristan Ong (王志文) and 48-year-old Joey Wee (黄绣惠) was finally crowned the champion of Mediacorp’s latest talent hunt competition Battle Of The Buskers (游走的歌王) at the Grand Final earlier this evening!

Singapore, 5 November 2023 – After months of intense competition, The ETC (闲杂人等) made up of 47-year-old Tristan Ong (王志文) and 48-year-old Joey Wee (黄绣惠) was finally crowned the champion of Mediacorp’s latest talent hunt competition Battle Of The Buskers (游走的歌王) at the Grand Final earlier this evening! Known for their electrifying chemistry and solid live performances, The ETC won the hearts and votes of both the public and judges, and edged out fellow finalists to walk home with a cash prize of $10,000 and a JBL PartyBox Ultimate worth $2,000.

Designed to spotlight the local busking culture and prowess of street performers, the competition underscores Mediacorp’s commitment to nurture local talents and aims to provide a platform for them to showcase their talents, fulfil their dreams and connect with the wider public. The Grand Final held at CQ @ Clarke Quay Fountain Square was hosted by Lee Teng (李腾), Mediacorp YES 933 DJ Jeff Goh and Karyn (诗敏) and saw the five finalists Evan Goh (吴宇凡), Papaya Duck, Part III, The ETC (闲杂人等) and T Junction (红绿灯) battling it out in two intense rounds of competition.

In both rounds, contestants had to perform a song each in order to earn the votes of audiences and impress the panel of judges made up of popular singer-songwriter Pakho Chau (周柏豪), renowned musician-singer Kay Huang (黄韵玲) and local producer-songwriter Jim Lim (林倛玉)Results were tabulated based on 50% online voting and 50% scoring by judges, and the two lowest-scoring contestants were eliminated in the first round. The remaining Top 3, Evan Goh, The ETC and T Junction continued their journey in the second round of the Grand Final and The ETC emerged victorious after performing 《又十年》, a song that resonated greatly with audiences and which demonstrated their strong vocals and outstanding showmanship. 

Sabanitha Shanmugasundram, Head of Commissioning & Community Engagement, Mediacorp said: “Battle Of The Buskers was launched specifically as an initiative to spotlight the local busking culture and we are thrilled to have raised more awareness of our street musicians and showcased their musical prowess to a wider audience through Mediacorp’s network. The contestants themselves have also brought us stunning live performances week after week and we are extremely proud of them, especially The ETC – congratulations on your win tonight! We hope all our buskers continue to brighten our streets and we look forward to their future performances!” 

Other highlights of the evening included stage performances from Pakho Chau, as well as Project SuperStar 2005 winner Kelvin Chen Wei Lian (陈伟联), artist-songwriter ShiGGa Shay (西阁), and Malaysian singer Priscilla Abby (蔡恩雨)!
