Mediacorp bags 57 accolades at New York Festivals TV & Film Awards 2024
Singapore, 18 April 2024 – Mediacorp has won a total of 57 accolades at the prestigious New York Festivals (NYF) TV & Film Awards 2024, which celebrates the best content created by storytellers and broadcasters from around the world. These include a haul of five Gold, five Silver and nine Bronze awards. Singapore's national media network also picked up two separate Finalist honours at the New York Festivals Radio Awards 2024, which was announced together with the TV & Film Awards at the NYF’s Storytellers Gala held yesterday.
Mediacorp’s 57 accolades at this year’s NYF – which also include 38 Finalist honours – were largely in recognition of its documentary and current affairs programmes by CNA, as well as drama content. Of the five Gold awards won, one was for CNA’s The Exiles, which came out tops in the “Documentary – History & Society” category. The historical documentary reveals untold stories of love and loss during an era of racially motivated deportations from post-war UK and Australia, and follows the descendants of the deported men as they reflect on seismic events from the past which still resonate today.
The Last Defenders of India, produced by Peddling Pictures, also snagged a Gold award in the “Documentary – Social Justice” category. The Last Defenders series takes viewers on a journey into Asia's forests, mountains and seas to witness how endangered wildlife is poached and plundered. This specific episode, set in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand, India, documents how local villagers Deepa Devi and Kiran Bhandari lead a group of women fighting against the building of a stone crusher plant near their village by a powerful local mafia.
Taking home a Gold in the “Craft Program – Direction” category was Reaching The Unreached: The Doctor For The Nomads, produced by Kraken Films. The current affairs series zooms in on the issue of high healthcare inequality in Asia, where there is on average only one doctor per 1,000 inhabitants in some of the least developed countries on the continent. It tells the stories of nomadic doctors who travel the continent to provide healthcare to some of the most rural and unreachable communities.
Also clinching a Gold was After Dark S2 – Skin Deep, produced by JUO Studios, this time in the “Craft Program – Special Visual Effects” category. In this episode of the horror anthology series, Narissa, a social media influencer keen to hide her facial birthmark from her audience, seeks an unorthodox beauty treatment that involves applying seeds to her face, only to find that the seeds have a far worse side-effect.
Rounding up the haul of Gold awards was Blue Petal Films’ Undercover Asia – Tainted Medicine Scandal in the “Documentary – Health/Medical Information” category. This episode of CNA’s award-winning investigative series takes a closer look at Asia’s tainted medicine scandal, which resulted in the deaths of 300 children in 2022 and 2023 after they consumed cough syrup. Tests revealed toxic ingredients, with the trail leading to India and Indonesia.
