Mediacorp scoops one Gold and four Silvers at Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards
Singapore, 27 September 2024 – Singapore’s largest content creator, Mediacorp has won a total of five Dolphin trophies – comprising one Gold and four Silvers – at the prestigious Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards. Announced yesterday at a presentation ceremony in Cannes, France, the awards honour the best corporate films, online media productions, documentaries and reports annually in one of the world’s most important film centres.
Mediacorp’s wins were for CNA documentaries Women of the Wetlands in the “Current Affairs” category (Gold); The Untold Legend of Vickie Dutton in the “History and Personalities/Portraits” category (Silver); Reaching the Unreached in the “Ethnology and Sociology” category (Silver); and Walk the Line in the “Investigative Documentaries and Reports” category (Silver). Chinese current affairs programme Tuesday Report: "7 Essentials" Series also took Silver in the “Trailers and Teasers for Documentaries and Reports” category.
Women of the Wetlands is a story about how climate change has impacted the women of the Sundarbans and how they are fighting back. In the aftermath of tropical cyclones which frequently hit the area, opportunistic criminals prey on the families and women in these devastated communities. Some of these girls are kidnapped and sold to brothels. The lucky few who manage to escape or are rescued, return home only to confront the social stigma attached to their traumatic experience. Cast aside by their communities, many struggle to overcome their predicament.
Produced by Peddling Pictures, The Untold Legend of Vickie Dutton traces filmmaker Larissa Ong’s intimate journey to rediscover the life of Vickie Dutton, a fashion designer and Singapore's first Malay model whose designs in her monthly magazine columns inspired many in the 1960s. As Ong creates a contemporary fashion spread inspired by Vickie's work, secrets from her past are revealed.
Reaching the Unreached, a current affairs series produced by Kraken Films, zooms in on the issue of high healthcare inequality in Asia, where there is on average only one doctor per 1,000 inhabitants in some of the least developed countries on the continent. The series follows the everyday doctor heroes on their journeys to isolated communities. The stakes are high: the caregivers have to save their patients while learning to deal with the difficulties of the trip on land, in air, and on water.
Walk the Line turns the spotlight on Chinese citizens entering the US illegally via its southern border in the hope of finding a better life in the Land of the Free, in spite of the dangers and treacherous journey. In this documentary series, CNA correspondent Wei Du travels the route with Chinese migrants and tries to understand why they were driven to such desperation, and if the American Dream is all it's made out to be.
Last, but not least, Mediacorp’s Chinese info-ed series Tuesday Report looks at the “seven essentials” of life: firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea; and how some of these materials have evolved and are used in different ways. Tuesday Report: “7 Essentials” Series relooks the original form of the sevens essentials, tell the humanistic stories behind them and explores how these seven essentials bring new surprises to a modern society like Singapore.
