Mediacorp wins one Grand Award and 38 other awards at World Media Festivals 2023
Singapore, 27 April 2023 – Mediacorp has won a prestigious intermedia-globe Grand Award – conferred on the top entry in each category – at the World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards 2023 for CNA’s What causes mental illnesses? The human brain and its link to mental health. The news report also bagged a Gold in the “News Reports and Features” category, adding to Mediacorp’s total tally of one Grand Award, 22 Gold and 16 Silver at this year’s World Media Festivals Television & Corporate Media Awards.
What causes mental illnesses? The human brain and its link to mental health, which aired on CNA in October 2022, examines the causes of mental illness and how various parts of the human brain affect one's everyday life. Presented by CNA presenter Steve Lai, the news report gives viewers an in-depth, visual look at the physiology of the brain and its link to mental health.
Of the 22 Gold awards won, one was in the “Documentaries: Activism” category for Looted, produced by Make Waves. The current affairs programme looks at how activists, archaeologists and social media sleuths are working to retrieve priceless artefacts stolen during the colonial era. They are gathering first-hand testimonies from looters, with photographic and forensic evidence to prove from when and where they were stolen. Others are putting political pressure on museums using social media to name and shame them and demand the return of the looted statues.
Another Gold went to Malay drama Kaki Bola in the “Entertainment: Family Special” category. Produced by Millenia Motion Pictures, the show recounts the story of Singapore’s football legends such as Fandi Ahmad and Sundram s/o Moorthy, who played for The Lions national football team during the Malaysia Cup years. Rekindling the spirit of football, Kaki Bola is a tale of friendship, spirit and perseverance.
In the “Marketing and Promotions: Programme Openers and Titles” category, Abyss of Greed 贪婪深渊 took Gold. Hosted by Mediacorp artiste Ayden Sng, the info-ed series traces how the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau successfully turned Singapore into one of the least-corrupt nations in the world. It features various infamous corruption cases in both the public and private sectors over the decades, and how investigators solved the cases despite various challenges.
