Mediacorp's Emerald Hill Breaks New Ground with Netflix Pre-Sale
Singapore, 4 December 2024 – Mediacorp, Singapore’s leading content creator, has announced that the much-anticipated series Emerald Hill 《小娘惹之翡翠山》 has been acquired by Netflix well ahead of its premiere – the first Mediacorp Chinese drama to secure a pre-sale deal. Breaking new ground, Emerald Hill will debut simultaneously on Netflix and mewatch, a first for Mediacorp’s Chinese drama production.
Emerald Hill is the star-studded follow-up to the acclaimed 2008 series The Little Nyonya, which captivated audiences locally and internationally, sparking widespread interest in Peranakan culture. This new drama continues to embody the rich heritage of the Peranakans – also known as Straits-born Chinese – a unique community primarily found in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia with roots from the 15th century. Through its characters, ornate costumes, and visually stunning sets, viewers will experience the Peranakans’ culture and traditions against the backdrop of a riveting story of female resilience and empowerment.
Set to premiere on 10 March 2025, Emerald Hill will be available to Netflix in Southeast Asia and prime subscribers on Mediacorp’s mewatch streaming service. The 30-episode series will also air on Channel 8, on 19 March 2025, reaching free-to-air viewers in Singapore.
“This isn’t just a drama – it’s a cultural phenomenon,” shared Virginia Lim, Chief Content Officer, Mediacorp. “The Little Nyonya stole hearts and shattered barriers worldwide, breaking viewership records, inspiring local adaptations, and cementing itself as a proud milestone for Singapore storytelling. Now, with Emerald Hill, we’re taking this legacy to new heights. Its bold narrative and stunning visuals will captivate audiences across the region on the world’s leading streaming platform.”
Set against the backdrop of a prominent Peranakan family, Emerald Hill tells a powerful story of women finding their strength. At its heart is Xin Niang, a young woman navigating the challenges of identity and family loyalty. As secrets come to light, tensions rise, and the lives of three women – Xin Niang, Anya, and Anna – collide in a gripping tale of ambition, power struggles, and emotional upheaval.
The pre-sale distribution deal with Netflix follows Mediacorp’s successful licensing arrangement for the Malay crime drama Operandi Gerhana (Phantom Squad) in 2023. Ahead of Emerald Hill's premiere, viewers in Singapore can rewatch the iconic The Little Nyonya now on mewatch here.
