Party Political Broadcasts

IMDA announced in a release on 1 July 2020 the allocated airtime for free-to-air radio and television for Party Political Broadcasts (PPBs) during General Election (GE) 2020.

Since the 1980 General Election, political parties that field at least six candidates under a recognised party symbol are eligible for airtime on free-to-air radio and television. Independents and political parties fielding fewer than six candidates under the same recognised party symbol are not eligible for the PPBs. The amount of airtime allocated is determined by the number of candidates fielded by the party. The order of the PPBs is determined by the number of candidates fielded, with the broadcast of the party fielding the least number of candidates aired first, and that fielding the largest number of candidates aired last.

The order and allocated airtime of the political parties for the PPBs are as follows:

Political Party

Air-time (per language)

Reform Party

2.5 mins

National Solidarity Party

3 mins

Peoples Voice

3 mins

Singapore Democratic Party

3 mins

Workers’ Party

4.5 mins

Constituency Political Broadcasts

Constituency Political Broadcasts (CPBs) are special, one-off arrangements for the General Election (GE) 2020 in view of the COVID-19 situation. These CPBs will give political parties and candidates more airtime to put their messages out to voters.

The allocated airtime of the political parties for the CPBs are as follows:

Type of Constituency

Airtime Allocated

Single Member Constituency (SMC)

3 minutes per candidate

Group Representative Constituency (GRC)
*For GRCs, parties can decide if one or more members will speak during the allotted time.

12 minutes per 4-member GRC

15 minutes per 5-member GRC

The order of the CPBs is based on the alphabetical ordering of the constituency. The broadcast for each constituency will begin with the incumbent, followed by other contesting parties or candidates.
